Ball Fitting & Drilling
A bowling ball only performs when it is drilled to the hand that throws it. At The Wright Fit Pro Shop, inside Parkway Lanes in Elmwood Park, NJ, we measure your hand and your release, then dial every drilling to your exact span, pitches, and Positive Axis Point — not a generic chart.
01
Measure your hand
We start with your span — the distance from the base of your thumb to the crease of your fingers — and your finger and thumb pitches. These numbers are the foundation every drilling is built on.
02
Find your PAP
Your Positive Axis Point is the single most important number in layout. We track a thrown ball to locate where your axis of rotation exits the cover, so every layout is dialed to your actual release.
03
Choose the layout
Pin-to-PAP distance, drilling angle, and VAL angle shape ball motion. We translate your rev rate, speed, and axis tilt into a Dual Angle layout that matches the lane condition you target.
04
Drill and finish
We drill on a precision jig, then surface the ball to the right texture for your condition — fresh Abralon for early read on oil, polished for length on drier heads.
Why fitting matters
Span and pitch control comfort and release. Get them wrong and you fight the ball every shot — squeezing, dropping, or losing revs. Get them right and the ball comes off your hand clean, repeating shot after shot. The same ball drilled two different ways plays two different lanes, which is why we never drill off a guess.
What we measure
- Span — thumb-to-finger distance, the starting point of a repeatable release.
- Pitches — forward, reverse, and lateral angles of the finger and thumb holes.
- PAP — Positive Axis Point, measured from a tracked ball, the anchor for every layout.
- Rev rate & speed — your real numbers, used to match coverstock, core, and surface.
What to bring
Bring a ball you already throw comfortably if you have one — it gives us a known reference for your span and pitches. If this is your first fitting, we measure from scratch. Plan about 30–45 minutes for a full fitting and drilling.
